Firecrackers Mistaken for Gunfire; Chief Kirk Blankenship Issues Statement

WEIS Radio has spoken with Centre Police Chief Kirk Blankenship regarding a social media post claiming a “shooting incident” occurred Tuesday night in front of the Cherokee County Rescue Squad Building – and he informed us that NO SHOTS WERE FIRED

An investigation into the matter quickly revealed that, in reality, teenagers in two separate vehicles had been TOSSING FIRECRACKERS at each other.

Apparently, some individuals mistook the sound of the firecrackers for gunshots, and called 9-1-1, which, Chief Blankenship says, under the circumstances was the right thing to do.  He stressed that he encourages all citizens to always call 9-1-1 to report ANYTHING suspicious – including incidents like this, adding that it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Chief Blankenship has spoken to the parents of those involved in the incident.
