Firework Safety Tips from Cedar Bluff Fire Chief Jason Stewart

Cedar Bluff Fire Department

Jason Stewart, Chief

PRESS RELEASE

As the Fourth of July Holiday quickly approaches, the Cedar Bluff Fire Department would like to remind all citizens to exercise extreme caution when using Fireworks.

Chief Jason Stewart reminds everyone that when you use fireworks outside your home to follow these simple safety tips:

  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks. Even sparklers are hot enough to cause third degree burns.
  • Only purchase approved permissible fireworks from a permitted/licensed vendor.
  • Light fireworks away from your home or any other buildings or vehicles, dry grass, brush or anything else that is flammable.
  • Only light one device at a time, then back several feet away.
  • If a firework does not go off, NEVER attempt to relight it. Douse it with water and then dispose of it.
  • After igniting fireworks, cool them completely with water before discarding them to prevent a trash fire.
  • Always have a bucket of water, garden hose and or a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Most importantly, ALCOHOL AND FIREWORKS DON’T MIX!

Fireworks are responsible for two out of five fires and hundreds of injuries across the state each Fourth of July; they can be deadly if not handled with care.

By all means, have a blast this Fourth of July just do so safely!
