First Look: Scorsese's “Silence”

Paramount Pictures – 2016(NEW YORK) — Paramount Pictures has just unveiled the first trailer to its upcoming Martin Scorcese film Silence.

Set in the 17-century, and based on Shusaku Endo’s 1966 acclaimed novel, the film has Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver playing Portuguese Catholic priests who travel to feudal Japan to find their missing mentor (Liam Neeson), at a time when practicing the faith was punishable by death.

The snippet gives a peek at what the missionaries face; in addition to the perilous journey to the then-mysterious country, the film’s portrayal of torture at the hands of the emperor’s forces, through the lens of cinematic legend Scorsese, is stunning.

The movie opens December 23.
