First Meeting for New District 2 County Commissioner Roger Nichols

Wednesday November the 14th was the first meeting for newly-elected District 2 Cherokee County Commissioner Roger Nichols; Nichols defeated incumbent Kimball Parker, who had held the seat for 12 years – in the June Republican Primary by slightly more than 500 votes. District 4 Commissioner Carlton “Bubba” Teague – who ran without opposition during the election cycle, was sworn in for another term by Probate Judge/Commission Chairman Tim Burgess, between the planning session and the regular meeting.

During the regular meeting, the Commission: Adopted the 2018/2019 Meeting Schedule;

Approved the hiring of Mark Abernathy as Nutrition Van Driver, as requested by the Centre Manager; Approved participation in the WEIS Radio “Shop at Home” Holiday Campaign in the amount of $1,800; Declared a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 from the Sheriff’s Office as Surplus to be sold at the next available public auction;

Approved Transfer of Title from a 2016 Chevy Impala to the City of Centre, and a 2016 Ford Interceptor Sedan to the Town of Leesburg, both from the Major Crimes Unit.  Both vehicles are already in the possession of the respective municipalities – however they will now have title as well; Approved to Renew Tax Revenue Enhancement Agreement w/RDS concerning Remittance Processing for 5% Lodging Tax; they also approved the following item:

Chairman Burgess stressed that this WAS NOT a new tax, but rather an agreement made by the Commission that they would continue to keep the current tax in place to help the school system back a loan.  Kane Burnette – with the law firm of Bradley, Arant, Boult & Cummings out of Birmingham, further explains:

Again, this is NOT a new tax, but merely a continuation of a tax already long in place.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is set for Monday, November 26th at 5:00pm, taking place in the County Administration Building on the Cedar Bluff Road in Centre.
