First Responders Called to Help Occupants of Camper Surrounded by Water on County Road 506

Shortly after 10:00 on Monday morning, first responders were called to the site of a camper surrounded by water on County Road 506 in the Calcedonia community in order to provide the occupants with a safe means of getting to dry land.

Earlier in the day, emergency personnel had to retrieve a car from the water; fortunately no one was in the vehicle as it began to drift away.  Also, at least two residents in the Money’s Bend campground in Cedar Bluff had to be rescued on Friday afternoon from rising waters.

A second shelter is now open for flood victims in Cherokee County – this one at Calcedonia Baptist Church on County Road 31 at Newberry’s Crossroads; that shelter opened with food and water for those in need at 7:00 Monday morning (February 25th).

That other shelter – supported by the American Red Cross – is located in the Activity Center at Cherokee Health & Rehab in Centre – where hot meals, showers and a place to sleep have been made available. While it is unfortunate, due to allergies and other issues there will not be any animals allowed in that shelter, with the only exception being service animals. You’ll need to make suitable arrangements for your pets prior to coming to the shelter.
