First Responders In Anniston Injured After A Tree Top Fell On Them While On a Call

First Responders in Anniston were injured when a tree top fell on them while they were on a call on Thursday morning.

According to a news release from the department, at 8:23 Thursday morning, Anniston Fire Engine 1 was dispatched to a “Tree on structure” with a possible entrapped person located at 101 West 35th Street.

Anniston Fire Engine 1 arrived on scene at 08:25 to find a tree on a mobile home with one individual trapped inside. Engine 1’s crew, that consisted of 3 personnel, 1 Sergeant and 2 Firefighters, executed a rescue of the person trapped in the mobile home.

As Engine 1’s crew transferred care of patient to the Anniston EMS ambulance crew, a second large tree top broke out of an adjacent tree falling on 2 Anniston Fire personnel and 2 Anniston EMS personnel.

The Sergeant on Engine 1 immediately issued a “MayDay” all call for any available fire units to be enroute to their location on a tree that has fallen on emergency personnel as well as a request to dispatch 2 additional ambulances.

All available fire units, which consisted of 2 pumpers, 1 Rescue and 1 command vehicle, were immediately dispatched. 2 ambulances were also dispatched, and multiple Anniston Police units responded as well. 2 responders were rescued from the second tree falling and transported to hospitals with nonlife threatening injuries.

1 Anniston EMS personnel was transported directly to UAB and 1 Anniston Fire Department member, Firefighter Walker Kent, was transported to Anniston RMC for initial assessment and then transferred to UAB hospital. Both are currently in stable condition.

The individual that was rescued from the mobile home was transported to Anniston RMC with injuries that were sustained from the initial tree falling on their mobile home.
