Former Centre Couple Murdered in North Carolina

A couple, who formerly resided in Centre, were found shot to death in their North Carolina home last Thursday.

Gary and Jackie Skelton resided in the small town of Leggett approximately sixty miles from Raleigh.  According to the Charlotte Observer, the town – where Gary Skelton served as the mayor – has a population of 55.

Jackie Skelton grew up in Centre attending Cherokee County High School.  She’s the sister of Centre resident Steve Sumners.  Her parents, Slim and Merle Sumners, owned and operated Cherokee Auto Parts for many years.  The couple’s son Stephen also worked for WEIS Radio several years ago.

Police have already arrested three people in connection with the slaying of the couple.  Keith Earl Williams, age 25, and Mitchell Brinson, age 18, have both been charged with First Degree Murder, while Dakeithia Nesha Andrews has been charged with Conspiracy Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Authorities reportedly haven’t discussed a motive, and investigators say they’re still waiting for forensic evidence to be processed.

According to court records, Keith Earl Williams had been released from prison on August 28th.  He had been convicted in April 2017 of two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon and felony Possession of a Firearm stemming from a shooting in Rocky Mount North Carolina in February of 2016.
