Former Centre Fire Chief Laid To Rest

IMG_0148Former Centre Fire Chief Hobert Reed was laid to rest in Centre on Thursday morning.

A procession of fire trucks and other emergency vehicles traveled down Main Street in Centre as Centre’s Engine #9 escorted the body of Reed to Cherokee Memory Gardens.

Reed was a 68 year veteran of the Centre Fire Department serving as Chief for 25 of those.

In 2005 the newly constructed Centre Fire Station #1 was named in his honor and in 2007 in honor of Reed’s 60 years of service to the department the new Engine 10 was officially put in service by Reed himself.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ivlyn Reed and survived by a brother, Garvis Reed of Rome, sons Gary Reed and Conrad Reed, a daughter, Lynn Doeg, 7 grandchildren and 8 grandchildren.

Reed was a WWII Veteran and also one of the very first members of East Centre Baptist Church where he served as a song leader and deacon.
