Former Daycare Worker Sentenced on Child Abuse Charges

An Etowah County woman, formerly employed as a daycare worker, has been sentenced on two counts of child abuse.

44 year old Karen Rowland, who entered a guilty plea back in December, was sentenced by Circuit Judge David Kimberly to a split sentence of two years in jail and ten years probation, with credit for time served while awaiting trial.

Under the terms of that sentence, Rowland will receive three years of supervised probation and will be required to pay court costs.

She will be barred from any contact with her victims and their families and prohibited from teaching or supervising any young children other than her own.

Rowland was arrested in 2014, on two counts of aggravated child abuse involving two four- year-old children.  According to investigators, she was seen on video hitting one child in the face with a folder and screaming at him, while shouting profanity at another then slamming his head into a table.
