Former El Salvador President Arrested on Fraud Allegations

iStock/Thinkstock(SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador) — Police in El Salvador have arrested former President Elias Antonio Saca on allegations of fraud.

Saca, who held office from 2004 to 2009, is accused of allegedly embezzling millions of dollars of public funds, according to BBC.

Prosecutors said according to BBC that six officials who served in the former president’s government were also being held.

Saca’s successor, Mauricio Funes, is facing an investigation of alleged political corruption as well, BBC reports. Another former president, Francisco Flores, died after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage in January while waiting to stand trial for corruption charges.
