The former location of Nichols Animal Clinic will soon be home to the new Cherokee County Animal Shelter, during their regular meeting on Monday the Cherokee County Commission went into a brief Executive Session to discuss the consideration the county was willing to offer/accept when considering the purchase, sale, exchange, lease or market value of real property.

The commission then returned and voted to accept an offer from Dr. Roger Nichols to purchase the property located at the intersection of the Piedmont Highway and County Road 71 for $100,000.

County Administrator Tim Burgess says the next step is to get the facility staffed as quickly as possible. Because Etowah County is longer accepting animals from Cherokee County and the fact that the county has found no other shelter to contract the services it is now required by law that Cherokee County have a shelter.

In other business, the commission approved an excess land redemption for Ryan Pridmore in the amount of $72.33, approved the hire of Shane Medley and Kyle Rinehart as HMT-1 (grade3, step1) at the Highway Department and also Michael Shane Abernathy as Nutrition Van Driver (grade3, step1).

Also approved was the hiring of Kyle Mize as Appraisal/Collections Clerk (grade4, step1) in the Revenue Commissioners Office and approved the hiring of Chris Parker and Bethany Garmon as Assessment/Collection Clerks (grade5, step1) in the Revenue Commissioners Officer.

Tony Nicole Keener was approved to be hired as Part Time Library Assistant (grade3, step1).

The commission also approved an agreement to spend FA Funds for a project on County Road 47 in District 3 in the amount of $235, 883.50 with a county match of $58,970.87.  An agreement was also approved for FA Funds to be spent on County Road 46 in the amount of $122, 973.91 from 2015 and $111,666.58 from 2016 with a county match of $58,660.12.
