Former Mayor of Summerville, Sewell Cash Passes Away / UPDATED – Funeral Service Wednesday, December 1st

Former Summerville, Georgia Mayor Sewell Cash passed away on Sunday (November 28th, 2021)

Cash attended Summerville High School, where he was a standout in both basketball and baseball – and he was the lead scorer on the 1950 Summerville High School State Championship Basketball team.  Cash went on to attend Georgia Southern University on basketball and baseball scholarships. In February of ‘51 Cash was drafted into the Korean War.

Cpl. Cash, served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War from 1951-1953.  Cash was attached to the 43rd infantry and was stationed in Dauchau, Germany with the G3 HQ in Intelligence. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the X-pert Marksman Badge, Combat Infantry Training Badge and many other ribbons and citations for his service

After the Korean War he worked at General Electric in Rome, Georgia.  He served as a City Councilman for Summerville from 1972 – 1977 – and he then served as Mayor of Summerville for twenty years from 1978 through 1997.

Cash is fondly remembered and held in high-esteem, for his dedicated service to both his community and for his time in the armed services

HONORABLE SEWELL PRESTON CASH, age 91, of East Teloga Road, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Sunday morning, November 28, 2021, at his residence. A native Chattooga Countian, he was born to the late Alfred A. (Shorty) and Arrie Dendy Cash on October 24, 1930. He was retired from General Electric in Rome. Mr. Cash was preceded in death by his wife, the late Betty Jean Cash on July 8, 2013, sisters, the late Betty Faye McGinnis and the late Harriett Carroll; brother, the late Jack Cash.

Mr. Cash was a star player for the Summerville High School 1950 Basketball State Champions and was drafted into the St. Louis Cardinal Baseball Organization for a period of time. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving as Corporal in the U. S. Army, 43rd Infantry Division from 1951-1953. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his family. Mr. Cash was a Youth League coach in the Summerville Recreation Department. Mr. Cash was the founding Director of the Chattooga County Veterans Memorial Park Committee. Mr. Cash was a 63 year member of the American Legion Post 129, VFW Post 6688, and a 23 year member of Sons of American Legion Squadron 129. Mr. Cash was a member of the City of Summerville City Council from January 1, 1972 to December 31, 1977, and he was Mayor of the City of Summerville from January 1, 1978 to December 31, 1997.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Keitha and Doug Shamblin; sons and daughters-in-law, Preston and Lori Cash and Michael and Terry Tucker. Granddaughters Tonya (Kevin) Woods, Michelle (David Glenn, Sr.; Grandson, Douglas (Beverly) Shamblin; Great Grandchildren, Brianna (Tyler) Chastain, Billy Woods, Ben Woods, Mason Shamblin, Cole Shamblin, Kiley May Glenn, David Glenn, Jr.; Great Great Granddaughter Georgia Kate Chastain.

Funeral services will be held Graveside at the Summerville Cemetery on Wednesday, December 1st, at 3:30 P.M. with Pastors Andy Hutchins, Kevin Woods, and Tyler Chastain officiating. Active Pallbearers are Douglas Shamblin, Billy Woods, Ben Woods, Mason Shamblin, and David Glenn, Jr.; Honorary Pallbearers are Jimmy Woodard, Pete Denson, Members of the Original Liar’s Table at Jim’s Restaurant, Members of American Legion Post 129, Members of VFW Post 6688, Members of Sons of American Legion Squadron 129, Members of Trion Golf Course, Tapestry Hospice Staff Leigha Hayes Byars and Sharon Hughes. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Chattooga County Shrine Club c/o Chattooga County Shrine Club, Summerville, GA 30747 or the Chattooga County Veterans Memorial Park at 818 Memorial Drive, Summerville, GA 30747, in Memory of Sewell P. Cash. A guest register is available at the Funeral Home.
