Funeral Arrangements for Probate Judge/Commission Chairman Kirk Day Announced

 

Jeffery Kirk Day, age 46 of Centre, passed away Wednesday, October 11th at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 3 PM Sunday, October 15th at Gadsden State Cherokee, with Pastor Gene Evans, Pastor Jack Roach and Pastor Keith Day officiating; burial will follow in Union Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 until 7:PM Saturday, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers include Dr. Barton Perry, Bob Perry, Ken Perry, Tim Burgess, Lance Lockhart, Michael Lockhart, Charles Hincy, Tony Wilkie, Harold Woodall, Mitchell Guice, Jarrod Bazemore, John Ellis.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all county employees and the class of ’93 USMA graduates.

Survivors include his parents, Wayne and Barbara Day of Centre; brother, Keith (Cyndi) Day of Centre; nephews, Justin Day and Joshua Day; niece, Gabriella Day.

Kirk graduated from Cherokee County High School with honors in 1989. He was appointed and accepted to the United States Military Academy and completed his degree in 1993. He served nine years in the Unites States Army as a platoon leader, company executive officer, and battalion-level adjutant. He completed his career in the United States Army at the rank of captain. His overseas tours included company commander in South Korea and battalion-level adjutant in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In 2004 he was appointed by Gov. Bob Riley to complete the unexpired term of probate judge. of Cherokee County. He was elected to this office in 2012 and served as probate judge and chairman of the Cherokee County Commission until the time of his death. Kirk based his public service on West Point’s values of “Duty, Honor, and Country.” He felt that government service was an honor and a sacred trust. He loved Cherokee County and worked tirelessly for the good of it’s citizens.

He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and cousin. He enjoyed history, science fiction, and an occasional cigar.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Believer’s Fellowship Church.

Cherokee County Probate Judge Kirk Day has passed away at the age of 46. On Thursday October 5th Day suffered a heart attack at his residence and was taken to Cherokee Medical Center, and then transported by ambulance to Redmond Regional Medical Center where he died on Wednesday afternoon. 

According to an official statement from the Cherokee County Commission Office, Jeffery Kirk Day was a 1989 graduate of Cherokee County High School in Centre, AL and a 1993 graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point. After serving nine years as an officer in the United States Army, Kirk returned to Centre. In 2004, Governor Bob Riley appointed Kirk to be Probate Judge of Cherokee County to complete an unexpired term. Kirk was elected to the Probate Judge position again in 2012 and served in that capacity until present time.

Judge Day was a thoughtful, hardworking man who cared deeply for Cherokee County and its citizens. To him, each day was another opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. He will be missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

On Wednesday, Alabama Supreme Court Justice Lyn Stuart Commissioned Cherokee County District Court Judge Wes Mobley as ‘Special Probate Judge’ pursuant to a formal request made to the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts by 9th Judicial Circuit Judge the Honorable Randal Cole and Cherokee County Chief Clerk Renee Gossett.

Judge Mobley will preside over the judicial functions of the Probate Court of Cherokee County and will also maintain his duties as District Court Judge.
