Gadsden Fire Chief Says Truck Found Upside Down in Coosa in 20 to 25 Feet of Water

Gadsden Fire Chief Steve Carroll says he believes the truck that crashed through a guardrail on the Meighan Bridge in Gadsden then plunged into the Coosa River just after 2:00 Sunday afternoon – has been located.  He says the vehicle appears to be upside down in about 20 to 25 feet of water.

It remains unclear if more than one person was in the truck.

The vehicle was reportedly traveling eastbound over the bridge, when it suddenly swerved into the two oncoming lanes of traffic before going off the bridge into the water.  There were no other injuries on the bridge.

Boats belonging to the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, Gadsden Fire and Marine Police soon converged on the scene and attempted to locate the truck using sonar equipment; however, the current and the dark waters of the Coosa frustrated searchers who continued efforts up until around 8:00 Sunday night.  At that point, crews were told to resume the search efforts early Monday morning.
