Gadsden State workshop attracts experts from across the country
Researchers, professors, biologists and aquatics specialists from universities, hospitals and research facilities across the U.S. will be at Gadsden State Community College this week for a workshop designed to fill a gap in modern medical research.
Gadsden State’s Aquaculture Department is hosting the second annual Zebrafish Husbandry Education Curriculum Development Workshop. It begins Tuesday, June 23rd and concludes Thursday, June 25th.
The workshop is designed to develop an educational program to train people to take care of zebrafish, which are now being widely used in medical research due to their affordability, high reproduction rate and rapid growth. About 500 U.S. labs are using zebrafish but many don’t understand how to properly take care of the fish. This workshop grew out of the need to eliminate this dilemma.
Gadsden State and the University of Alabama at Birmingham designed the workshop so biologists and researchers can work with aquatics specialists to develop a program of study that will prepare students to grow and care for the zebrafish needed for research.
Participants are coming from prestigious institutions, such as Boston Children’s Hospital, Princeton University, Northwestern University, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Houston Methodist Research Institute. Instructors are from Gadsden State, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Washington, the University of Minnesota and other aquaculture-based businesses and institutions.
The workshops on Tuesday and Thursday will take place at the Gadsden State Aquaculture Department. The Wednesday workshop will be at UAB.
