The first Alabama Sports Writers Association basketball rankings of the New Year were released late Wednesday evening, with several area girls and boys teams scattered about.

The Spring Garden Lady Panthers (17-2) lead that group, coming in at No. 2 in the Class 2A girls poll. The Sand Rock Lady Wildcats (9-7) join them in the top 10 at No. 9.

Two other area girls teams received consideration in Class 3A Collinsville (7-4) and Class 4A Cherokee County (13-4).

In this week’s boys poll, Class 3A Piedmont (2-2) comes in at No. 6. Class 2A Spring Garden (11-3) and Sand Rock (12-3) are ranked eighth and 10th respectively.
