Garden girls sink 15 treys in rout of Cleburne County

HEFLIN – The Spring Garden Lady Panthers sank 15 3-pointers in a 91-43 basketball rout at Cleburne County on Tuesday.

Sarah Kate McKay connected on six treys and came away with 26 points to lead the Lady Panthers (17-2). McKay also managed three blocks, a pair of rebounds, a pair of assists and a steal.

Ace Austin added 22 points, including four treys. She also had 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals. Lexie Adkison had 15 points, eight boards, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Neely Welsh contributed 10 points, five assists, three rebounds, three steals and a block. Abbie Woods finished with five points.

Cleburne County led 17-15 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Panthers blew the game open with a 26-6 run in the second to take a 41-23 lead at halftime. Spring Garden was ahead 61-39 after three quarters.

In boys action, the Panthers rallied in the second half for a 62-49 win.

Weston Kirk led the way with 26 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. He also had six rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks for the Panthers (11-3).

Cooper Austin added 11 points, six boards, six assists and three blocks. Cam Welsh contributed 10 points and three rebounds. Chaz Pope finished with five points, seven boards, an assist, a steal and a block.
The Panthers trailed 16-13 at the end of the first quarter and 27-26 at halftime, but forged ahead 43-37 by the end of the third quarter.
