Gaylesville Man Arrested Following A High Speed Pursuit On Monday

 

A Gaylesville man is behind bars on numerous charges after attempting to elude officers on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Leesburg Investigator Jamie Chatman it all began when he witnessed the suspect traveling at a high rate of speed on Highway 411, Chatman ran the tag on the vehicle which came back expired and when he attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle the suspect fled through the parking lot at Kerr’s Redi Mix and continued through lot at the Huddle House and Wendy’s almost striking a pedestrian.

The suspect continued at a high rate of speed through the Wal-Mart parking lot and began throwing beer out of the vehicle again almost striking a pedestrian with his vehicle. 

The suspect continued around the rear of the store and managed to get back onto Highway 411 where the chase continued into Leesburg and onto Highway 273 where speeds reached in excess of 120 miles per hour. After running out of gas the suspect fled on foot but was quickly apprehended after being tased.

21 year old Michael Lamar Helms of Gaylesville was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on charges of Driving on the Wrong Side of the Highway, DUI, Following to Close, Criminal Littering, Speeding, Failure to Display Proper Insurance, Improper Passing, Speeding over 25 miles per hour, Passing a Stopped School Bus, Three counts of Reckless Driving, Speeding over 45 miles per hour on a County Road, Failing to Signal, Failure to Signal, Expired Tag, Reckless Endangerment, Possession of Imitation Drugs, Attempting to Elude and Resisting Arrest.

Helms currently remains in the Cherokee County Detention Center without Bond, Investigator Chatman says he is extremely thankful no one was injured.

Leesburg Police Chief Brent Grimes, Centre Police and Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted in the pursuit.
