Gaylesville shuts out Appalachian, 30-0

GAYLESVILLE – The Gaylesville Trojans opened Class 1A, Region 7 play with a bang Friday, blanking Appalachian 30-0 to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Senior running back Hunter Penney posted 148 yards on seven carries and scored a touchdown. Junior fullback Keylon Higgins had 95 yards on 12 totes with two scores. Senior running back Michael Reynolds finished with 67 yards on 11 carries, and senior running back Jacob Gordon ran for a touchdown.

While the offense churned out the yards, the Trojan defense pitched its first shutout since a 34-0 victory over Asbury in the 2018 season opener.

Reynolds led the Trojan defense with 12 tackles, including six for loss, with a sack and an assist from his linebacker spot. Penney, also a linebacker, tallied five stops with an assist. Higgins, a defensive lineman, registered four tackles, three for loss, with a sack and an assist.

Senior lineman Briley Mitchell made six tackles, one for loss, with three assists and a fumble recovery. Gordon, a linebacker, had two sacks, two tackles for loss and interception. Junior defensive back Seth Lee also had an interception.

Gaylesville travels to Coosa Christian on Friday.
