Gilley Family Wins $50,000 Grand Prize On ABC’s Great Christmas Light Fight

The Gilley family from Ballplay took home the $50,000 grand prize for the Christmas light display outside the family home, which regularly attracts thousands of visitors each holiday season.

ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight spotlights elaborate displays all across the United States.

The show, now in its sixth season, described the Alabama attraction as a “legacy-carrying mechanical display gone wild, including a moving elephant, alligator, dinosaur and more.” The lights have been shining since the mid-1980s, with several distinctive handmade touches added each year.

The late J.C. Gilley, who died in January 2002, put together each fixture with lights and welded metal over a 20-year period. During the segment on the family, the show’s host, Carter Oosterhouse, moved among the display’s motorized alligator and dinosaur, marveling that the displays use discarded parts, such as an ice cream maker’s motor.

Other displays include two spinning footballs, spinning Christmas trees, dancing figures, a Noah’s ark with rainbow, an Easter tomb, and a Nativity scene, featuring Mary rocking a cradle with one hand and churning butter with another.
