Heat Advisories in Effect for Much of Alabama

Heat Advisories have been issued for much of Alabama.

Air temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid-90s for many areas, and those combined with dew points in the 70s will make it feel especially unpleasant for those stuck outside during the afternoon hours.  There are two separate advisories, one for part of central Alabama and one for part of north Alabama. Both will be in effect through Friday.

The heat advisory for north Alabama will run from noon today until 7 p.m. Friday.

The heat index is expected to reach as high as 105 degrees this afternoon, and Friday afternoon as well, according to the National Weather Service.  To make matters worse, forecasters aren’t expecting much heat relief after the sun goes down. Lows across north Alabama will only fall into the mid-70s tonight, and the heat index will range in the upper 70s to 80-degree mark

A separate heat advisory has also been issued for west-central Alabama.

It will also be in effect from noon today until 7 p.m. Friday.  The National Weather Service in Birmingham said the heat index is expected to range between 105 and 108 degrees in that  area. Some could see a shower or storm this afternoon, but the chances are on the lower side and could mainly affect eastern Alabama, according to forecasters.

Hot weather is expected to persist through the weekend and into next week as well, as the state remains stuck under the influence of a ridge of high pressure to the west.  The weather service said some models show that high starting to weaken next week, possibly bringing increased rain chances.
