Heat Move Practice to Houston Amid Hurricane Matthew Threat

iStock/Thinkstock(MIAMI) — With Hurricane Matthew approaching the eastern coast of the United States, the Miami Heat are leaving town to continue their preseason workouts.

A spokesman for the team told ESPN the Heat will head to Texas Wednesday night to use the Houston Rockets’ practice facilities. The Rockets will be out of state for a pair of preseason games in China.

Forecasters predict Matthew, currently a Category 3 storm, could reach the United States and brush Florida by Thursday morning.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned that the storm “could bring devastation to Florida [that] we haven’t seen in years,” adding that “we cannot rule out a direct hit on Florida” starting as early as Wednesday. He declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm.

Scott said that the effects of Matthew could be “catastrophic,” bringing with it a chance of heavy rain, rip currents, beach erosion, tornadoes and hurricane-force winds.
