In high school football last night there was plenty of overtime excitement.
Class 2A Sand Rock and Section were knotted at 16 when time expired in regulation. In the end, the Wildcats were 30 to 23 winners in double overtime at Section.
At Cherokee County, the Warriors also went to overtime when Eric Burgess kicked a 32 yard field goal to tie Cleburne County 38-38 with 28 seconds remaining in the game. Unfortunately, for the Warriors, Cleburne County would tack on a field goal in the extra session and finish with a 41-38 victory.
Collinsville and Sumiton Christian also went beyond four quarters of play. The Panthers were tied with Sumiton at 26 when they entered overtime. Sumiton scored first put failed to convert their on their extra point attempt. Collinsville scored and converted the point after to remain unbeaten
In other area games, Class 6A Gadsden City shut out Albertville 14-0. In Class 5A Southside-Gadsden topped Fort Payne 28-14 and Etowah cruised past Columbia 53-7. Other 4A games had Lincoln edging Hokes Bluff 21-14, Alexandria over Anniston 21-12, and Munford downing Jacksonville 35-20. Class 3A, No. 2 Piedmont handed Cleveland their first loss of the year. The Bulldogs blasted the Panthers 55 to 7. In Class 2A, North Sand Mountain nipped Gaston 24-20 and in Class 1A, Region 7 it was Cedar Bluff over Jacksonville Christian 61-23, Spring Garden outdistancing Coosa Christian 34 to 7 and Gaylesville falling to region leader Valley Head 33-7.
