High Winds Cause Small Sailboat to Capsize on Weiss Lake Monday Afternoon; No Injuries Reported

A quickly developing storm front moved across the eastern portion of Etowah County – and then continued into Cherokee County Monday afternoon.

Some boaters were taken by surprise, caught out on the lake during the height of the storm, with high winds causing their small sailboat to capsize around 4:30.

The Cherokee County Rescue Squad immediately responded and the victims were retrieved from the water; all were checked out after being brought ashore and determined to be okay.  Meanwhile, the vessel was towed back to the Sail Club on the west side of the lake.

There were multiple reports of trees being downed by strong winds in Sand Rock, Leesburg and Cedar Bluff among other locations.  The National Weather Service reported winds of up to 50 mph being associated with that fast-moving system.
