Highway 68 to Remain Closed for Around Four More Weeks

Highway 68 1Highway 68 West from Leesburg to Sand Rock remains closed.

Those who travel that route continue to wonder how much longer that road will be closed – and when that extra eight mile detour up Alabama Highway 273 to county 48 will no longer be a part of their day.

WEIS Radio News contacted the Alabama Department of Transportation to see if they could shed some light on the situation. Seth Burkett the North Region Information Specialist with the Department informed us that the contractor has finished drilling the soil nails – and that the next step will be installation of the Gabion cage and erosion control mats and grassing.

These final steps could take up to two weeks depending on the weather.

Then the State DOT will reinstall guardrails and repave the damaged asphalt.

All-in-all it looks as though it’ll be about a month before things are back to normal.

WEIS Radio News will carefully monitor the situation and keep you informed.
