Highway 68 Westbound Finally Reopened

highway 68The Alabama Department of Transportation advises motorists that the westbound lane of Alabama 68 between Leesburg and Sand Rock reopened Monday afternoon following completion of emergency slide repair by geotechnical specialists.

A slide that developed on the mountainside following heavy rainfall in late December  created major safety concerns and necessitated closure of the westbound lane.

Due to the undermined westbound lane, collapsed shoulder and guardrail, the roadway was compromised and too narrow to safely accommodate traffic traveling in both directions.

Following the rain event, ALDOT responded immediately, gathering information, consulting geotechnical specialists and designing a fix.

Contractor Hayward Bakerbegan work Feb. 1 to construct a soil nail retaining wall and Gabion cage to stabilize the mountainside and roadway after being awarded the $263,000 contract in an emergency letting.
