Historical Photo Exhibit & Festivities at the Summerville Depot – Saturday, July 15th

The Chattooga County Historical Society and the Summerville Main Street program invite the public to attend Chattooga: Through the Lens of Time. This free exhibit will feature over 200 historical photographs of Chattooga County’s history will be presented this Saturday, July 15 at the Summerville Depot during the hours of 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Susan Locklear, coordinator of the Main Street Program said, “This wonderful collection of photographs shows life in Chattooga County over the past 125 years. All areas of the county are represented in the pictures. Attendees can look forward to viewing historical photos, having old timey photos made, food, fun, and lots of history at this event.”

History buffs will especially enjoy highlights scheduled for the day which include historians on site sharing information on the photo exhibit, free tours of the historic Couey House narrated by Historical Society members Reba Welch and Steve Strickland, and the arrival of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s antique steam engine and passenger train. The arrival of the train is scheduled for approximately 12:30 p.m. Following the arrival, there will be a viewing of the Summerville Turntable in action.

County attendees are encouraged to bring any old photos they would like for the Historical Society to scan on- site and preserve for county history purposes. According to Gene McGinnis, president of the local Historical Society, “This will also be an opportunity for you to bring photos to be scanned for preservation in the Historical Society collection. Your photos can be scanned without leaving your possession an the Historical Society will make every effort to preserve them in perpetuity. We are delighted to preserve family, work, school, church, scenery, towns, or any other historic photos related to the county.” There will also be an opportunity to vote for your favorite photos on display. The Historical Society will also be accepting new membership from those wishing to join.
