House Passes Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019

The House has passed its second piece of major gun control legislation with the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 – passing by a vote of 228 to 198.  That bill would lengthen the review period for background checks conducted before someone is allowed to purchase a firearm.

Current law allows gun sales to move forward if a background check hasn’t been processed within three days. The bill calls for that to be extended to 10 days.  Following that initial 10 business day period if a background check hasn’t been completed the buyer may request an escalated review from the FBI, and if a background check isn’t resolved after the additional 10 day review, that purchase may proceed.  On Wednesday of this week the House passed a measure which would call for universal background checks on all firearms purchases.

Both of the measures are expected to fail in the Republican-controlled Senate and President Trump has vowed to veto them if they make it to his desk.
