Hurricane Sally Makes Landfall at 4:45am Wednesday

Hurricane Sally track 7 a.m. CDT

Hurricane Sally made landfall close to Gulf Shores around 4:45am Wednesday – with winds of 105 mph.

Sally is the first hurricane to make landfall in Alabama since Hurricane Ivan.  Ivan, a Category 3, made landfall just west of Gulf Shores on this very same day in 2004.

Sally strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane overnight – and the eye wall of the storm has been “pounding” southern Baldwin and Mobile counties along with the Florida Panhandle for hours now, according to the National Weather Service in Mobile.

The weather service said it has received reports of dangerous flash flooding where citizens have been rescued in Baldwin County.  Forecasters also said they have reports of more than 20 inches of rain so far along the coast.  The weather service said many roads in coastal Alabama, and northwest Florid,a are under water and impassable.

Sally is forecast to track to the northeast and weaken more quickly today.

Flash flooding is widespread across south Alabama this morning.

Again – we’ll keep you updated throughout the day on what this storm front means to us locally.
