In a tweet, Chris Evans seemingly bids farewell to Captain America

Marvel Studios(HOLLYWOOD) — After previously hinting that Avengers 4 might be his last film as Marvel superhero Captain America, Chris Evans posted a message on Twitter Thursday in which he seemed to be bidding farewell to the character.

“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4,” he wrote. “It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”

Back in March, Evans talked to the New York Times about hanging up Cap’s shield for good after Avengers 4 re-shoots were complete.

“You want to get off the train before they push you off,” he said.

He later explained on Good Morning America, “A lot of our contracts are through. Myself, [Robert] Downey [Jr.], [Chris] Hemsworth, we all kind of started roughly at the same time, and I think we all, through Avengers 4, kind of all wrap it up.”

While fans are still holding out hope that Evans may return for more films, that remains to be seen.

In addition to Avengers 4, Evans played Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger; The Avengers; Captain America: The Winter Soldier; Avengers: Age of Ultron; Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.  He also made three cameos as Cap — two uncredited, one credited —  in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ant-Man and Thor: The Dark World.
