Initial Ruling “Accidental” on Fatal Dock Fire at Jackson County Park Marina

The Scottsboro Fire Department has declared the fire at Jackson County Park Marina, which ultimately claimed eight lives in January of this year (2020), to have been “accidental”.  Fire Chief Gene Necklaus told WAFF that the area of origin is believed to have been onboard one vessel and that the cause did indeed appear to be accidental in nature – although he did not elaborate.

The fire broke out on January 27th, destroying about three dozen boats and claiming a total of eight lives – including six members of one family: Grace Annette Watson Miles age 40; 19 year old Christopher Zane Long; Bryli Anniston Long, age 16; Trayden Dominic Miles, age 10; Kesston Damian Miles; and Dezli Nicole Miles, age 7.  The father of the family, Joe Miles, suffered burns but survived the blaze.

Also killed were 38 year old Amanda Foster and 54 year old Yancey Ferrell Roper.

The full fire investigation report and determination of cause is being facilitated through the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office and we’ll have additional information once the report is released.
