Investigation Continues into Death of Man Being Booked into Chattooga County Jail

According to Chattooga County Coroner Earl Rainwater it could still be some time before an official cause of death is known in regard to the passing of 46 year old Joey Boyd.

Boyd collapsed while being booked at the Chattooga County Jail on the afternoon of January 23rd after being brought in on traffic-related charges by the Summerville PD.  Sheriff Mark Schrader said that during the booking process, Boyd complained of not feeling well prior to collapsing to the floor; jail staff immediately began trying to stabilize Boyd while other staff members contacted Redmond EMS who transported him to Redmond Regional in Rome for treatment.

Sheriff Schrader was informed later that afternoon that Boyd had passed away.  The sheriff stated that even though the cause of death was medical in nature, he wanted the incident to be investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Coroner Rainwater said with the backlog of cases with the Georgia Crime Lab it could be six to eight weeks – or possibly even longer – before a report is released.
