Casting director Cindy Tolan tweeted a casting call Thursday for the lead roles in the film, which the notice says is being directed by Spielberg and being adapted by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner.

West Side Story was originally created for the stage in 1957 as a modern-day, musical Romeo and Juliet involving two gangs on New York City’s West Side with music by legendary composer Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.  It was adapted into a film in 1961 by director Robert Wise.

The casting call — for the roles of Tony, Maria, Anita and Bernardo — notes that the actors should be between 15 and 25 years old, must be able to sing, and dance experience is a plus.
