Jeffery Kirk Day

Jeffery Kirk Day, age 46 of Centre, passed away Wednesday, October 11th at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 3 PM Sunday, October 15th at Gadsden State Cherokee, with Pastor Gene Evans, Pastor Jack Roach and Pastor Keith Day officiating; burial will follow in Union Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 until 7:PM Saturday, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers include Dr. Barton Perry, Bob Perry, Ken Perry, Tim Burgess, Lance Lockhart, Michael Lockhart, Charles Hincy, Tony Wilkie, Harold Woodall, Mitchell Guice, Jarrod Bazemore, John Ellis.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all county employees and the class of ’93 USMA graduates.

Survivors include his parents, Wayne and Barbara Day of Centre; brother, Keith (Cyndi) Day of Centre; nephews, Justin Day and Joshua Day; niece, Gabriella Day.

Kirk graduated from Cherokee County High School with honors in 1989. He was appointed and accepted to the United States Military Academy and completed his degree in 1993. He served nine years in the Unites States Army as a platoon leader, company executive officer, and battalion-level adjutant. He completed his career in the United States Army at the rank of captain. His overseas tours included company commander in South Korea and battalion-level adjutant in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In 2004 he was appointed by Gov. Bob Riley to complete the unexpired term of probate judge. of Cherokee County. He was elected to this office in 2012 and served as probate judge and chairman of the Cherokee County Commission until the time of his death. Kirk based his public service on West Point’s values of “Duty, Honor and Country.” He felt that government service was an honor and a sacred trust. He loved Cherokee County and worked tirelessly for the good of its citizens.

He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and cousin. He enjoyed history, science fiction, and an occasional cigar.
