Keeping the Cold Out

Cold Weather 5With temperatures forecast for the next several nights at well below freezing – you need to keep in mind the “Four P’s” for cold weather:  People, Pets, Pipes and Plants.

On the outside of your home, cover water spigots with a Styrofoam cover to prevent cold air front directly hitting your bare faucet. If you have any additional above ground water lines, covering them with pipe foam insulation will reduce the chance of busting a water line.

Inside, open cabinet doors under kitchen and bathroom sinks during below freezing nights. The warm air in your home will allow your pipes to stay away from freezing temperatures. To keep your home warm and saving a little bit on utilities, check for air leaks around windows and doors. If you find any leaks, you can purchase window and door silicone sealant to fix them. For a temporary solution, you can also cover air leak spots with a towel to stop cold air from coming in.

Consider moving any outdoor plants inside that can’t handle below freezing temperatures.

For outdoor pets, bring them inside if they are sensitive to cold air. If that isn’t an option, placing out extra bedding for warmth will help.

Lastly, cold conditions can be hard on the elderly. If you have some as neighbors, check on them every now and then.
