Kentucky Fugitive Captured in Cherokee County on Monday

CCSO - Caldwell

A Fugitive from Justice out of Kentucky, was taken into custody by law enforcement officials in Cherokee County on Monday evening.

According to Sheriff Jeff Shaver – a multi-agency manhunt took place along County Road 18 in the Gnatville community, involving Sheriff’s Office Deputies, U.S. Marshals, Calhoun County Deputies, Piedmont Police Officers, a Helicopter Unit from the Alabama State Troopers, and the Tracking Team from St. Clair County among others.

29 year old Robert Coltin Caldwell of Jenkins, Kentucky was taken into custody and booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center just after 8:00pm.

Caldwell had been hiding in a wooded area off County Road 18 however after the helicopter and dog team arrived he surrendered without incident.

Caldwell is also wanted on several other warrants in his home state including felony Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.

He remains in the Cherokee County Detention Center awaiting extradition to Kentucky.

Sheriff Shaver credits the county’s new digital radio system with being a big help in conducting the search for, and apprehension, of the subject – as those radios provided clear communication in an area where there had previously been very little, if any, radio coverage.
