Leesburg Police Arrest An Etowah County Educator For Having A Sexual Relationship With A Student

Leesburg Investigator Jamie Chatman says an Etowah County educator has been arrested accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.

Chatman told WEIS Radio News that 27 year old Thomas Stephen Lawrence Coggins is charged with a school employee having sexual contact with a student. Coggins is a math teacher and coach at Etowah High School in Attalla.

According to Chatman, authorities launched an investigation into the educator after Coggins was found with an 18-year-old high school senior inside a vehicle on Mother’s Day in Leesburg.

Coggins bonded out of the Cherokee County Jail Friday afternoon.

Chatman said he would like to thank Cherokee County sheriff’s Office Investigator Michael Green for his assistance in the case.
