Leesburg Town Council Appoints New Council Member To Fill Unexpired Term

The Leesburg Town Council has appointed a new Council Member to fill the unexpired term of former Councilman Brandon Betterton – Cody Adams was unanimously appointed to the position during the council’s regular meeting on Monday.

Adams is a Leesburg resident and is married with two children; he is employed as District Manager with the Gadsden Office of the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Adams will be officially sworn in at the next regular meeting.

Also during the meeting, Leesburg Police Chief Lanny Ransum announced that Officer Chris Vaughn has tendered his resignation – Officer Vaughn is leaving Leesburg to take a job with the Cedar Bluff Police Department.

Following that discussion the council agreed to seek additional information and to garner quotes for insurance coverage for employees.

Councilman Joe Sonaty discussed the idea of purchasing some exercise; handicap accessible playground equipment for the playground at the Town Park, the council is looking at the possibility of placing the project into next year’s budget.

Mayor Edward Mackey said that the State has denied approval for a grant for an access road for KTH – the town is now looking at the possibility of letting the county perform the work.

In other business the council approved the purchase of a Utility Vehicle for the Leesburg Landing from Gadsden Golf Carts in the amount of $6,200.

Mayor Mackey announced that the Town will be hosting a Bass Pro Shop Big Cat Quest Catfish Tournament on July 11th at the Leesburg Landing; the tournament will give away $1,000 per hour for seven hours – Mackey said that County Commissioners’ Carlton Teague, Kimball Parker and Randy Jones have gave $1,500 each toward that payout.
