Lenora Mears McWhorter

Lenora Mears McWhorter of Cedar Bluff passed away October 9, 2016.  Funeral services will be held at Cedar Bluff First United Methodist Church at 4 pm Wednesday, October 12, 2016.  Dr. Don Wright, Dr. George Cobb, and Rev. Tim Kendrick will officiate.  Burial will follow at Cedar Bluff Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the Cedar Bluff First United Methodist Church from 2 until 4 pm Wednesday.  The family requests memorials be made to the Cedar Bluff First United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers.

“Miss” Lenora taught in the Cherokee County schools for twenty-nine years – one year as Home Economics teacher at Gaylesville High School and twenty-eight years at Cedar Bluff High School as a Science teacher. 

“Miss” Lenora was preceded in death by her husband Paul Kerr McWhorter, Jr., brother John Ulric Mears, Jr., and parents Mr. and Mrs. John Ulric Mears. 

She is survived by her son Paul (Betty) Kerr McWhorter, III, daughter Lenora “Len” McWhorter Arnold; 3 grandchildren Jonathan (Lisa) Summers McWhorter, Summer (Josh) McWhorter Summerford, and Michael Kerr Arnold; 2 great-grandchildren Emma Rose McWhorter and Mabry Rae Summerford;  brother Dr. Thomas (Ruth) Wakefield Mears and numerous nieces and nephews. 

“Miss” Lenora was very active in her community and church.  She was a member of the Cedar Bluff First United Methodist Church, former Cedar Bluff Town Council member, delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels Program, charter member of the Cherokee County Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, member of the Cherokee County Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, substitute Sunday School teacher, member of the Cedar Bluff United Methodist Women’s Group, served on the Administrative Board of Cedar Bluff First United Methodist Church, member of the Cherokee County Red Hat Society, and a long-time member of the church choir.

“Miss” Lenora grew up in Gadsden, Alabama and graduated from Gadsden High School in 1943.  She attended Huntingdon College and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1947. 

Pallbearers are former students of “Miss” Lenora: Roy Wynn, John Roy Covington, Bo Martin, Jimmy Dean, Tommy Lee, Hoppie Morris, Mack Starling, Dewayne Pierce, Brian Johnson, and Steve Bishop.  Honorary Pallbearers: Former Students, Colleagues, and Members of the John Chestnut Sunday School Class.  The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Barton Perry, caregivers from Home Instead, and Gentiva Hospice.
