The Leesburg Town Council held a special called meeting on Thursday evening for the sole purpose of accepting the resignation of Leesburg Police Investigator Brian Gilliland.

A lengthy Executive Session was held just prior to the meeting before the council reconvened  and very reluctantly accepted Officer Gilliland’s letter.

Gilliland says that he is leaving the Leesburg PD to accept a position with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.

With the departure of Officer Gilliland the police department is now operating with only two officers including Police Chief Lanny Ransum.

The council also voted to immediately post the position through August 1st when the council will meet again, normally job postings are for 30 days however in an emergency situation it must be filled within two weeks.
