Longtime Centre Fire Chief Hobert Reed Has Passed Away At The Age Of 91

One of Cherokee County’s most dedicated first responders has passed away at the age of 91.

Longtime Centre Fire Chief Hobert Reed passed away on Sunday – Reed was a 68 year veteran member of the Centre Fire Department serving as Chief for 25 years, Reed was a member of the department in 1973 when they purchased the original Engine 10 which is now personally owned by Reed.

IMG_0027In 2005 the newly constructed Centre Fire Station #1 was named in his honor and in 2007 in honor of Reed’s 60 years of service to the department the new Engine 10 was officially put in service by Reed himself.

Reed was a WWII Veteran and also one of the very first members of East Centre Baptist Church where he served as a song leader and deacon.

Funeral services for Hobert Reed are scheduled for Wednesday at 7:00p.m. with visitation from 4-7p.m.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ivlyn Reed and survived by a brother, Garvis Reed of Rome, sons Gary Reed and Conrad Reed, a daughter, Lynn Doeg, 7 grandchildren and 8 grandchildren.
