Lyerly, Georgia Man Charged With Manslaughter In Connection With Fatal Car Crash In Centre

A Lyerly, Georgia man has been charged in connection to a two vehicle accident that killed an elderly Centre couple on Friday night in Centre.

According to Cherokee County Coroner Dr. Jeremy Deaton, Jerry Cox, Sr. Age 82 of Centre was pronounced dead on scene by Chief Deputy Paul D McDonald. Patricia Cox, age 81 of Centre, Mr. Cox’s wife, was taken to an area trauma center where she died as a result of her injuries. Both subjects died from apparent multiple blunt force trauma and the manner of death is currently under investigation by the Coroner’s office.

The accident occurred at approximately 8:11 pm, at the intersection of Chestnut Bypass and East Main Street in front of O’Reilly Auto Parts.

According to Centre Police Chief Kirk Blankenship, 58 year old Charles Owen Lang was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on Friday night following the wreck on charges of DUI and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance. On Sunday, he was additionally charged with two counts of Manslaughter.

Lang remains in the Cherokee County Detention Center without bond.

The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office and the Centre Police Department are investigating the circumstances surrounding the wreck.

Floyd EMS, Centre Fire Department, Cherokee County Rescue Squad, Centre Police, and the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office all responded to the scene.
