Man Arrested in Southwest Sydney After 'ISIS-Inspired' Attack, Police Say

iStock/Thinkstock(SYDNEY) — A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged with terrorism after an “ISIS-inspired” attack in southwest Sydney, according to police in Australia.

Police said the suspect allegedly attacked a 59-year-old with a knife in a suburban park on Saturday. The victim is in serious condition after being stabbed several times.

The suspect also reportedly tried to stab a policeman before he was apprehended, police said.

Although police did not think the attacker had any ties to ISIS, they said they believed the incident was inspired by ISIS.

“We can clearly say though, this is inspired by ISIS. We do know that, and the degree of any radical extremism is something that we now have to identify,” New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said.
