Man Falling Asleep Behind Wheel Leads to Monday Morning Crash on Highway 100 in Summerville

Summerville Police say that a man falling asleep at the wheel is what led to a car crash early Monday morning on Highway 100 near the Summerville Recreation Center.

Lieutenant Tim Fulmer with the Summerville PD, said the driver was identified as Samuel J. Pointer of Cave Spring, Georgia, age 45.  He was driving a 2010 Dodge Ram pickup, when he apparently fell asleep and the vehicle left the roadway and continued to travel northbound onto the right shoulder of the roadway before first striking a culvert, then hitting a concrete block fixture – causing the truck to flip.

The pickup then traveled another 80 feet on its top before striking a concrete curb and then a section of black metal fencing at Saratoga Courts.  The truck then traveled another 18 feet before finally coming to a stop.

Pointer and his 20 year old passenger Daniel Minter, were treated at the scene by Redmond EMS for minor injuries.

That accident, which occurred around 7:00am, remains under investigation.
