Man Found Dead in Abandoned Home in Anniston During City’s Annual Count of Homeless

A man was found dead in an abandoned home Wednesday morning in Anniston, during the annual count of the city’s homeless.

Lori Floyd with the non-profit group the Right Place in Anniston discovered the man’s body on a mattress while searching an abandoned home as part of the city’s point-in-time count, which helps the city and federal government and understand the scope of homelessness.

Floyd said that she believed the body to be that of a man known as “Fred” – a homeless man she had visited with before as part of her outreach to the homeless.

While an ID matching his name was found inside the home, the Calhoun County coroner has said he couldn’t yet confirm or deny the man’s identity, adding DNA testing may have to be conducted to provide a positive ID.
