Man Wanted on Multiple Felony Warrants “Escapes Custody” of Authorities in Leesburg; May be Hiding Out in Floyd County, Georgia / UPDATED

Floyd County Police have issued a News Release regarding the search for a man wanted on multiple felony warrants.  According to information in that release – Derick Anthony Stone, age 23, “escaped the custody” of Alabama authorities in Leesburg Monday night (December 17th) and could be in the Floyd County, Georgia area. 

The specific charges against him were not listed however according to recent news reports, he was accused of stabbing another man in the upper back and lower neck, causing serious injury.  Stone, who at the time, was living in the Silver Creek area – was charged with felony Aggravated Assault in early September of this year in connection with that incident.

WEIS Radio News spoke with Leesburg Police Chief Brent Grimes Wednesday morning and he informed us that Stone had been a passenger in a vehicle that had been pulled over for a routine traffic stop on Monday night. 

Stone was removed from the vehicle and placed in handcuffs; however while the driver was being placed under arrest for a violation of the prohibition law – Stone fled on foot prior to the arrival of backup and managed to elude officers.

It’s unknown whether he currently remains in the Cherokee County area or if he has indeed returned to Floyd County as authorities there suspect.
