Manziel Reaches Deal to Dismiss Sexual Assault Case

(Phil Ellsworth / ESPN Images)(DALLAS) — Former Cleveland Browns quarterback and college football star Johnny Manziel has reached a deal with prosecutors to dismiss a domestic assault case involving his former girlfriend, according to a report by ESPN.

The charges against the Heisman Trophy winner carry a $4,000 fine and could land Manziel in jail for up to a year.

Manziel’s attorney Jim Darnell told ESPN that there was still work to be done in Manziel’s case, but that he was encouraged by the hearing. Another hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 1.

ABC News has reached out to Darnell for comment.

The allegations stem from an incident in January, when Manziel’s former girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, alleged that Manziel had forced her into a car outside of a Dallas hotel. They traveled to a bar, Crowley said in an affidavit, and when she tried to leave him, he struck her. Manziel has denied the allegations.

Manziel, who will turn 24 later this year, has fallen on hard times since starring for Texas A&M as a college quarterback. His ability on the field, sense of humor and occasional brashness helped earn him the nickname “Johnny Football.”

The Browns drafted Manziel in the first round in 2014. In his two seasons with the team, Manziel started only eight games, and the team lost six of those eight.

The Browns released Manziel this March.
