(LOS ANGELES) — Maze Runner: The Death Cure knocked Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle out of the top spot at the box office with an estimated $23.5 million weekend. However, the third film in the Maze Runner franchise, starring Dylan O’Brien, fell $9 million short of the 2014 debut of its predecessor, The Scorch Trials.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, with an estimated $16.4 million, falls to number two after three weeks at number one. The film has now surpassed Spider-Man: Homecoming, and tops Spider-Man 3 to become Sony’s third largest domestic release of all-time.
Overseas, Welcome to the Jungle added an estimated $17.7 million, bringing its international take to $822 million.
Hostiles — starring Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike — earned $10.2 million in its first week of wide release for a third place finish. The Greatest Showman bowed in fourth place with an estimated $9.5 million weekend.
Rounding out the top five was The Post, bringing in an estimated $8.85 million.
Additionally, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water got a big bump from its 13 Oscar nominations, taking eighth place with a $5.7 million weekend.
