Message from the Gadsden/Etowah County EMA Regarding Heat Wave

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE GADSDEN/ETOWAH COUNTY EMA

Heat Indices to Approach 100+ this Weekend through Tuesday

We will feel the heat in Etowah County beginning this weekend through next Tuesday. According to a briefing with the National Weather Service in Birmingham, heat indices expected in our area will be over 100 degrees for a period of several days. “Heat index” is what it feels like outside.

Due to the extreme heat index, the Gadsden/Etowah Emergency Management Agency wanted to remind the community of areas available to seek refuge from the heat.                                                                                                       

Following are the normal operating days and times for air-conditioned public places that will be open:                                                                                                 

  • Gadsden Public Library located a 254 College Street.  Operating hours are from 9 am until 5 Friday and Saturday.  Contact: 256-549-4699.
  • The Salvation Army Shelter: Located at 114 N.11th Street.  The shelter is open from 5 PM to 7 AM. Contact: 256-546-4673

The following City of Gadsden Community Centers will be open normal hours on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • East Gadsden Community Center 921 Wilson St., Contact: 256-549-4673
  • Carver Community Center 1030 Tuscaloosa Avenue, Contact: 256-549-4667

The need for additional centers will be evaluated as conditions warrant.

The EMA wants to remind you to drink plenty of water to replace fluid and minerals in your body.  Wear light, loose fitting clothing, and a protective layer of sunscreen.  Shade young children with a hat or umbrella.  Please check on the elderly. Make sure your pets have plenty of fresh water and adequate shade. If you are working outdoors, please take frequent breaks and, If you begin to experience heat related symptoms (lack of sweating, dizziness, confusion, or muscle weakness), seek emergency treatment immediately.
