Michael Glenn DeBerry

Michael Glenn DeBerry, age 55 of the Ball Play Community, died July 15, 2013 after a long fight with cancer.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Perry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary DeBerry and Edward Kelley officiating, burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 p.m. until the service at 3 p.m.

In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family.

Michael was born Feb. 28, 1958 in Etowah County to Austin and Faris DeBerry. He was born with a hearing defect in both ears. Michael grew up in Ball Play on his dad’s farm, where he learned to do farm work along with his three siblings.

At age 6, he started attending the Alabama School for The Deaf and Blind in Talladega, Alabama. At age 13 he had surgery on his ears at the Shay Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee. After the surgery he could hear for the first time and started to attend regular school at Cherokee County Middle School in Centre, Alabama. He graduated from Cherokee County High School in 1977. After graduation he worked on his daddy’s farm. In later years he married and had two sons. He worked for 11 years at Fruit of The Loom in Leesburg, Alabama.

Michael is survived by two sons, Justin DeBerry, Piedmont, AL and Jerry DeBerry, Centre, AL., mother, Faris DeBerry, Rainsville, AL., brother, Darrell (Kathy) DeBerry, Centre, AL., sisters, Dianne Pierce, Rainsville, AL and Rebecca Selvage, Piedmont, AL., nephews, Chad Gannon, Josh DeBerry and Brian DeBerry, great nieces and nephews Jessica Bishop, Jonas and Lilly DeBerry

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Austin C. DeBerry and nephew, Terry Bishop.

Pallbearers include Jimmy DeBerry, Chad Gannon, Dakota DeBerry, Brian DeBerry, Jason DeBerry, and Chris DeBerry.

Honorary Pallbearers include Josh DeBerry, Joseph King , Taylor Knowles, and Ty Chandler.

The family wishes to express their gratitude and love to the Southern Care Hospice Team and especially his hospice care nurse, Virgie, for their wonderful care of Michael.
